Rhinoscopy

nose.png

The purpose of Rhinoscopy is to inspect the nasal passageways visually. This examination inspects for structural defects, nasal polyps, blockages, abnormalities, laryngeal injuries, and to determine the underlying cause of discharge from the nose. Otolaryngologists (ENT) are able to perform the exam.

Nasal polyps are soft, painless little growths on the lining of a nasal passageway. They hang down like teardrops. Polyps are typically triggered by recurring sinus infections, asthma, hay fever, and cystic fibrosis. Symptoms can be postnasal drip, reduced sense of smell, nasal congestion, and stuffiness.

Nose abnormalities can be cosmetic or functional in nature. Nasal trauma can result in a septal hematoma, a collection of blood between the lining of the nose and septum. The trauma may result in a saddle nose deformity, where the nose saddles in the middle. The fracture can result in the shifting of nasal structures leading to nasal obstruction and cosmetic changes occurring.

Blockages in the nasal passageway encompass anything that hinders the airflow and affects one or both passages. Factors that can contribute to this are enlarged bony structures in the nasal cavity, nasal polyps, and nasal tumors.
