Esophagoscopy

Esophagoscopy is an examination of the inside of the esophagus using an endoscope. A test such as this is used to diagnose and treat diseases of the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that travels behind the trachea and heart, passes through the diaphragm and empties into the upper region of the stomach. It is part of the digestive system.

An esophagoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure in that it requires no incisions. The endoscope is passed transnasally or orally. An anesthetic is usually applied to numb the patient in the particular area so no discomfort is felt during the procedure.

There are three different types of esophagoscopy, they are:

  • Flexible esophagoscopy - this is performed by inserting a thin endoscope through the mouth and down the throat into the esophagus.
  • Transnasal flexible esophagoscopy - this is performed by inserting a thin endoscope through the nose and into the esophagus.
  • Rigid esophagoscopy - a rigid endoscope is inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus.

Esophagoscopy is performed to treat a variety of diseases such as acid reflux, chronic cough, having difficulty swallowing, foreign body, and globus sensation. Physicians that can perform this procedure are gastroenterologists, general surgeons, and otolaryngologists.
