Diverticuloscopes

Diverticulectomy is the treatment of diverticulosis. Diverticulosis occurs when pockets called diverticula, form in the walls of the digestive tract. These small pouches bulge outwards through the colon or large intestine. It can occur without symptoms or complications, although, serious complications can occur as a result of diverticulosis. A few symptoms of the condition are difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, and coughing. Diverticulosis is about 40% common in individuals over the age of 60.

Treatment of the condition shows a low complication rate. Standard treatment consists of cutting the constricted cricopharyngeal muscle to relieve constriction. In order to do the procedure, a soft diverticuloscope is inserted into the patients mouth to visualize the esophagus and diverticulum. The physician uses the eyepiece for the duration of the procedure and makes the appropriate incisions to the muscle. Whilst in surgery, the patient is put under general anesthesia so as not to feel pain. General recovery times are 1 to 2 days, and the procedure is said to be about 90% effective in patients. With an endoscopic approach, no external incision's are made.
