Laryngoscopes

Laryngoscopy is the exam done below the back of the throat where the voice box (larynx) is located. The exam is done through a laryngoscope, a medical device that allows physicians to examine the larynx. This test is particularly useful for discovering the causes of voice and breathing problems, pain in the ear or throat, and blockages in the airway.

Laryngoscopies are performed by ear, nose, and throat specialists (ENT). The three different kinds of laryngoscopy are:

  • Indirect laryngoscopy
  • Fiber-optic laryngoscopy
  • Direct laryngoscopy

Indirect laryngoscopy is a procedure that can be performed in the doctor's office using a small mirror held at the back of the throat. The doctor will aim a light at the back of the throat and will be able to examine the larynx, vocal cords, and hypopharynx. This method is not typically used with children because it can cause gagging.

Fiber-optic laryngoscopy allows doctors to look deep inside the throat by used a telescope. This is typically done by inserting a thin, optic instrument either through the nostril, or mouth. The doctor decides whether this procedure is done through general anesthesia, or if numbing medication is to be used on the particular area.

Direct laryngoscopy is done via the mouth where the patient is put under general anesthesia and does not feel the scope in their mouth.
