Laparoscopy is a type of surgery that uses tiny cuts to insert a small video camera to perform an operation. The process takes it's name from a laparoscope, a small video camera with a light on the end. This is one form of minimally invasive surgery.

Laparoscopy was originally used for gallbladder surgery and gynecology procedures. It then was used for the intestines, liver, and other organs. Physicians will recommend a laparoscopy to examine the appendix, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, spleen, stomach, and reproductive organs. In doing so they will be able to detect tumors, liver disease, the effectiveness of other treatments and any fluid in the abdominal cavity.
